BACnet International Publishes New BACnet Guide Specification

Provides building automation system designers and specifiers with neutral spec to save time on project submissions

As part of an education session at the 2023 AHR Expo in Atlanta, GA, BACnet International announced a new BACnet Guide Specification. BACnet International is an industry association that facilitates the successful use of the BACnet protocol in building automation and control systems through interoperability testing, educational programs and promotional activities.

Grant Wichenko, president of Appin Associates, presented the session, titled BACnet-centric Guide Spec, on Monday, February 6, 2023 as part of BACnet International’s education track. He announced the public availability of the guide spec at the conclusion of the session. The guide spec is based on the Department of Defense document and Wichenko worked with the original author to update and optimize it for BACnet projects.

The primary goal of the guide spec is to assist building automation system (BAS) designers and specifiers with the laborious task of writing a spec for each BACnet project. The guide spec will save time, make it easier to develop project documents, and, ultimately, provide the author with a better finished product. It covers BACnet objects and services and can be inserted into the BAS designer’s existing Division 23 or 25 specification.

“The goal of BACnet International is to provide BACnet resources to industry professionals that not only increase their knowledge but also make their lives easier,” stated Andy McMillan, BACnet International president and managing director. “As an association focused on broad industry success, we provide neutral guidance, information, education and documents. We are happy to continue our mission with this guide specification and expect it to save consulting engineers and other system specifiers substantial time and cost.”

The BACnet Guide Specification is available through The BACnet Institute (TBI), BACnet International’s free online education environment that serves as a central source for globally relevant information and education related to BACnet. Although access to all of the resources on TBI are free, registration is required. For more information, and to access the guide specification, visit bacnetinternational.org/guide-specification.

About BACnet International

BACnet International is an industry association that facilitates the successful use of the BACnet protocol in building automation and control systems through interoperability testing, educational programs and promotional activities. BACnet International oversees operation of the BACnet Testing Laboratories (BTL) and maintains a global listing of tested products database. The BACnet standard was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and has been made publicly available so that manufacturers can create interoperable systems of products. BACnet International complements the work of the ASHRAE standards committee and BACnet-related interest groups around the world. BACnet International members include building owners, consulting engineers and facility managers, as well as companies involved in the design, manufacture, installation, commissioning and maintenance of control equipment that use BACnet for communication.
